USA has a long history in supporting female sports teams. Biney, Schmitt or Edwards are just a few examples of female athletes who have made a name for themselves in the world of sports. Yet, there are some female sportsmen that merit special recognition, despite all the victories of women's team sports. Let's look at some more noteworthy ones. Biney

Maame Bijny, an American short track speedskater, won bronze in the Women’s Short Track event of the 2018 Winter Olympics. She was in PyeongChang for the 2018 Winter Olympics' short track competition. Biney's remarkable performance has generated worldwide interest. Here are some things to know about Biney. She is a true champion who is determined to win the world's best competition.

Schmitt

Allison Schmitt, one the most decorated female athletes in America, spoke out about her struggle with depression. After the 2012 Olympic Games, she was dropped from the national team as well as the world championships. She also struggled to cope with depression. She fell into deep depression. She struggled to compete at the 2016 Olympic trials and even thought about driving off the road. She was successful in returning to the pool and became a US Olympic Swimming Champion.

Vollmer

Dana Whitney Vollmer, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, is also a former world record holder for swimming. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, she set a new world record. She was also awarded the Olympic bronze medal in the event and the bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics. As a former college swimmer, Vollmer has been training for years in order to be a world-class athlete. Here are five reasons Vollmer deserves to be so great:


Joyner-Kersee

Jacqueline Joyner Kersee (USA) is a former track and field athlete. She won four Olympic gold medals, three gold, two bronze, and two silver. She is one of the all-time greats in the long jump and the heptathlon. She won the 1984 Olympic title for long jump. Joyner-Kersee also won silver in the long leap in 1996.

Evans

Aja Evans, bobsledder, was an Olympic medalist with Team USA. She also serves as a brakeman for the bobsled. She was born in Chicago and was an All-American shotputter and track & field City Champion. Evans, a University of Illinois student, won a shotput title and was an All American in track. After joining the 2012 bobsled team, Evans was able to perform at the Olympics.

Voisin

Maggie Voisin, a U.S. Olympic female athlete, is this year's Maggie Voisin. After suffering a broken leg, Voisin missed the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. After sustaining a left ACL tear, she was unable to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Voisin has been out of competition for eight year due to her injury.

Retton

Retton, a 2004 President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports member, was one of many organizations created by the U.S. government in an effort to increase physical activity and encourage Americans to get involved in sports. The United States Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Public Health and Science has the council. While the bill did not become law, Retton met with its sponsor and helped to drop the proposal.
