The history of soccer in the US is a mixed bag of overly ambitious owners, poor investments, and aging players. The NASL was established in 1960 and managed to attract a large number of fans. Then, indoor soccer took over in the 1970s and '80s, with solid fan showings but financial woes. Although the MISL folded in 1992 it is still part of the American soccer pyramid.
Major League Soccer
Major League Soccer's American League of Professional Football's success is remarkable, but it has had a somewhat obscure history in the United States. It was established in 1996. There were 10 teams, and it was then divided into two conferences: Eastern and Western. It took several years before the sport gained widespread popularity. With over 300 participating teams, the league is now one of America's most beloved sports.

The American Soccer League was created in the 1920s, and its foundation teams were drawn from industrial towns. As soccer became more mainstream, more World Cups were hosted in the USA. The US today has more fans than any other country. Here is a brief history about American soccer.
U.S. Men’s National Team
The U.S. National Team Men's has participated in many major international tournaments. The men won in 1994 the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. They then went on to win CONCACAF Gold Cup. In August of that year, they beat Canada in overtime at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This was the first ever time that the United States beat Canada in a soccer match. It also set a record for U.S. soccer.
Women's National Team
In 1987, the women’s national soccer team was formed and began playing international competitive soccer. The team played a series games in Italy, with mixed results. They lost three games against Denmark, and drew one. Their greatest win was against the Soviet Union. The US won it 8-0. However, the team's fortunes didn't last forever.

The U.S. men’s nation team won the Nike U.S. Cup Gold Cup, and they won the World Cup. This is the first time that the U.S. has ever won the Gold Cup.
