The U.S. men’s national soccer team was virtually nonexistent until 1982. Although the North American Soccer League had been established in 1960 and 1970, it failed to make a mark in global soccer. However, that didn't stop U.S. Soccer. The United States' first World Cup appearance was in 1982. After losing to Egypt in tiebreaker, they were 1-1-1.


The history of the U.S. soccer team is long and varied. U.S. soccer's debut at the World Cup was in 1990. The team reached the quarterfinals twice. Today, the team is a dominant force in the sport and has hosted three World Cups.

It hosted two FIFA Women's World Cups.

In 1999, the United States hosted the Women's World Cup. The competition was re-located from China, where it was hosted for the first time in 1994. The bid was approved and the U.S.S. Soccer team hosted the tournament. The tournament was also hosted by the U.S. Soccer organization. In U.S. Cup '95 the US women's soccer team beat Mexico 4-0 and tied Colombia. In addition, the women's team came in third, beating Canada 3-0 and earning all-star honors.

Other than the World Cup the US soccer team hosted numerous other international soccer events such as the Women's Olympic Games, Pan-American Games, and the Women's Olympic Games. The US women's team has made great strides since the 2014 games, and their success in the World Cup has boosted their international reputation. Tobin Heatingh, Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe are the most prominent names in women’s football.

It has won four Olympic Gold medals

The United States soccer has won four Gold Medals in Olympic soccer's history. Each team has won a gold and a silver medal, both for the men's and womens' teams. The first gold medal was won by the US soccer team in 1996. They defeated China in Atlanta 2-1. They defeated Norway 2-0 to win the second gold medal in Sydney. Then, they won three consecutive games.

The women's soccer team has a history of dominance, and the team's first semifinal match in Rio was a tough loss to Canada. Although they have won more gold medals than any other team, they have not won any World Cups. Abby Wambach hasn’t considered retiring yet. But, she has used the Olympic experience as motivation to improve the team.
