The Associated Press has named LeBron James and Serena Williams as Athletes of the Decade. They defeated Olympic gymnast Simone Biles (Olympic gymnast) and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (both finalists). The list also includes Lindsey Vonn and Katie Ledeck, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Men's athletes include Lionel Messi (Michael Phelps).

LeBron James

LeBron James is undoubtedly the greatest basketball player of all time. But he is also an entrepreneur who has had many off-court success stories. He has a minority stake at Liverpool Football Club and launched a production business. Uninterrupted Media is his digital media business. His numerous projects have helped him gain more visibility. His goal? To help the Los Angeles Lakers regain their glory days.

James was named the AP Athlete of the Decade by Usain Bolt, Lionel Messi and Michael Phelps on Monday. As a controversial figure, James was the first star of the NBA to receive this award in 2010. After spurning the Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat, he was viewed as a villain in the league, but he soon earned acclaim. He was the MVP and won three NBA titles in a row.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams has been a dominant tennis player over the past decade. This earned her the title Female Athlete in the Decade. The vote was based on Serena Williams' achievements on and off court. She won 12 Grand Slam singles crowns, became pregnant for the first, fought against racism within the athletic community, was an inspiration for young women, and was awarded the Grand Slam Singles titles.

She has won numerous singles slams and claimed 12 Grand Slam titles since 2007. This feat has never been achieved by another woman. She is also Steffi Graf’s record holder for the longest consecutive week at top. Serena also reached the finals in 19 majors and won 37 singles titles.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest soccer player ever, is undoubtedly the best. He is the greatest goal scorer of all time, as well as one of the top free-kick takers, passers, dribblers and passers in soccer's history. Among other things, Messi completes more dribbles, plays more through balls and finds more passes into the penalty area than any other player. His dominance over other players has earned him the nickname Ruthian. This word does not appear in every dictionary but it is used on sports pages to denote Messi.

Messi's professional career includes many other honors, awards, and distinctions. Two times, he was named to Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World. Time magazine in 2011 named him one of the most influential 100 people in the globe, and Laureus World Sportsman of the Decade was awarded to him in 2020. His career earnings total $1 billion. After starting at a Barcelona youth school at the age of 13, Messi has since won six La Liga titles, two Champions League title, and five Copa del Rey championships.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is considered the most decorated Olympic athlete in the last decade. He is one of the most decorated Olympic athletes, with 22 medals including eight golds at 2008 Beijing Games. He also has more national titles and World Championships wins than any other swimmer.

His Olympic success has made his name synonymous to swimming. Michael Phelps isn't slowing down, despite being absent from the competition for so long. He started a foundation to teach swimming to children and to promote the sport. He's even dedicated more time to his foundation, which funds swim training programs and teaches kids the basics. He still receives text messages from old friends who ask him when he'll come back to competing.
